KEALAKEKUA — A teen accused of sexual assault remains in police custody and is being held without bail after violating terms of his initial release from jail in February.
Samuel Latrik, 18, appeared before 3rd Circuit Court Judge Robert D.S. Kim on Tuesday to discuss the return of a bench warrant, which was issued Friday after the Hawaii Intake Service Center filed court documents indicating the teen had violated the terms of his release on bail by not checking in with his social worker.
Latrik was arrested at the Kealakehe police station at 5:40 a.m. Tuesday. He faces numerous class A felony sexual assault charges connected to the 2016 Old Kona Airport rape case. He is one of two males arrested and charged in the crime.
On Tuesday, Kim rescheduled the hearing for Thursday, as a court Marshallese interpreter was not available to be in the courtroom to assist with translating proceedings to Latrik. Thursday’s hearing will discuss the verified application to revoke bail, recognizance or supervised release.
Latrik was arrested in January on $50,000 bail and charged as the second suspect in the assault against a woman at Old Airport on Sept. 3, 2016. According to the Hawaii Police Department, two boys approached a woman, punched and sexually assaulted her. Police added the boys fled when confronted by an unidentified person.
His co-defendant, Tyrone Sigrah, recently pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual assault, second-degree assault, kidnapping and second-degree robbery. The 17-year-old, who had been charged as an adult, now awaits sentencing, which is scheduled for Sept. 18.
A 17-year-old juvenile at the time of the crime, the family court judge waived jurisdiction to 3rd Circuit Court where Latrik would face charges as an adult. A Kona grand jury indicted the teen in January on three counts of first-degree sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault, kidnapping, second-degree robbery, first-degree terroristic threatening and sexual assault.
Latrik is scheduled for a jury trial on Oct. 23.
During a bail hearing in February, Kim lowered Latrik’s bail to $25,000. Part of the conditions of the teen’s release was to check in twice a month face-to-face with his social worker at Hawaii Intake Service Center and call every week on Wednesday.
According to court documents, Latrik has not reported by phone or in person to Hawaii Intake Service Center from June 27 to July 17.
While the defendant did leave a message on July 18, indicating that he was checking in, “it still does not negate the fact that he failed to report HISC over three weeks,” court documents indicate.
